Bagavatham 5.12.12

Meaning:

My dear Rahugna no one can attain the perfected stage of devotional service without being favored by a great soul or a pure devotee. No one can attain the perfected stage simply by following regulative principles of scriptures or by accepting the renounced order of life or by prosecuting the prescribed duty of house holder or by becoming a great student of spiritual science or by accepting  sever austerity and penances for realization.

We have our own set of assumptions according to which we lead our life. These opinions are formed from our past experiences and from our understating about the environment. We show resistance to accept anything not in line with our view. We behave like the frog dwelling in the well. The frog fails to accept the magnitude of the sea and always seems to compare the sea with the well.

A Guru is a person who removes our preconceived notions. He shows us the way on which we can tread without any worries. After walking a few miles in the direction shown by the Guru, we realize that earlier we used to proceed in a wrong direction. This realization makes us to be ever thankful to the One who has shown us the route. It was such a realization Pillaiorangavallidasar had, which changed His life.

Pillaiorangavallidasar was married man working in the Royal Palace as a security guard. He was madly in love with his wife. He was totally immersed in the beauty of his wife’s eyes to such an extent that he developed an opinion that no pair of eyes in this world was more beautiful that his wife’s. Further, he had no shame in accepting that he was slave of his wife’s eyes.

It was a festive time at Srirangam – Abode of Lord Ranganatha. Swami Ramanujar with His disciples was walking through the streets of Srirangam. There He saw Pillaiorangavallidasar walking in backward direction. Swami Ramanujar was totally astonished to see the sight. Swami Ramanujar called Pillaiorangavallidasar. The disinterested Pillaiorangavallidasar came to meet Swami Ramanujar, but was unable to even tolerate a few moments of separation from his wife.

Swami Ramanujar asked the reason for his walking backward. Pillaiorangavallidasar without hiding anything told that he liked his wife’s eyes very much and he was walking in the backward direction enjoying the beauty of his wife’s eyes. Swami Ramanujar liked Pillaiorangavallidasar’s sincerity. Swami Ramanujar assured Pillaiorangavallidasar that He would show a pair of eyes, the beauty of which was unparallel in the entire universe. But Pillaiorangavallidasar was reluctant to accept Swami Ramanujar. But Swami Ramanujar was not ready to let Pillaiorangavallidasar go that way. At last Pillaiorangavallidasar accepted that if Swami Ramanujar showed a pair of eyes which were more beautiful than that of his wife he would become a lifelong slave to such eyes.

Hearing this Swami Ramanujar got excited. He dragged Pillaiorangavallidasar to Srirangam’s Temple and brought him in front of Lord Ranganatha’s shrine and told him to have a look at the lotus like graceful eyes of Lord Ranganatha. Pillaiorangavallidasar lifted his head to see the eyes of Lord Ranganatha. The graceful eyes completely mesmerized Pillaiorangavallidasar. Shedding his materialistic pre conceived notions, Pillaiorangavallidasar accepted with joy that Lord Ranganatha’s eyes were the most beautiful in the world. From that moment he became a disciple of Swami Ramanujar. It was this moment of realization that changed Pillaiorangavallidasar’s life and he progressed to become one of the renowned disciples of Swami Ramanujar.

This is the magic of Guru’s Grace. It could change a transform a person within no time.

As it is rightly mentioned in the above verse that any of Spiritual practice in absence of Guru’s Grace is futile. It was guru’s Grace which uplifted Pillaiorangavallidasar and not any kind of rituals or rites.

' short stories to regain your faith '

In our last issue we saw how the two girls were traced by the pirates who were madly attracted by their beauty. But the mercy of Lord Krishna is unbounded. Once we start thinking about Him and start chanting His nama He instantly beings thinking about us, taking care of us and save us from every difficulty.  All that we need to do is to just surrender ourselves to Him and have a faith that He is with us irrespective of the time, place and situation. These two girls had this faith on our compassionate Krishna. They had a unconditional faith that Krishna who came for the rescue of Kunti Devi,Draupadi, Uttara,Sackubai, Meera, shall surely save them also.

See the faith which these girls had in Lord Krishna. At times we believe in Lord and admire Him for His deeds. But the movement we experience some trouble or some sorrow we immediately start loosing faith in Lord and all our anger turns towards Him. The first question that comes to our mind is Hey God why are you troubling me like this? Why don’t you listen to my prayers?  We even go to the extent of doubting His existence or even abusing Him.  But this uncomplaining, kind hearted and empathetic Krishna never gets angry on His children. He very well knows what is good for us and gives us that only but we people fail to understand His grace.

Each trouble or sorrow that we face in our life has some hidden message in it which we fail to learn. We see only the incidence and get so much drowned in it that we hardly notice or neglect the message that the incident has conveyed to us. If we fall down in some pit or some where then we get a message that next time we have to be extremely careful while passing through the same way. If some one ditches us then we get an idea about the mentality of the persons around us and it teaches us a message that we should never blindly believe in everyone.

Similarly each and every incident that takes place in our life has a message in it.  In fact Krishna is neither troubling nor putting us in grief but He is teaching us a lesson at every stage of our life.  We ourselves are responsible for all our sorrows and suffering. We can in no way blame Lord for this. We have no rights for it. He is giving us only the best of the best but our self-esteem, pride, jealously, our urge to attain more and all the bad qualities hidden within us does not allow us to realize this.

Whatever takes place in our life it is for our good only. We should have this attitude and this should be our approach towards life. Then only we can lead a peaceful, successful, contented and happy life. The girls had this mind set. In fact they knew nothing about Krishna except what they had heard from that Mahatma and the merchants. But those incidences narrated to them had fairly aroused an unconditional faith within them. They never doubted His existence. According to them Krishna shall surely come for their rescue.

And of course Krishna rescued them by changing the mind of the leaders of the pirates. These two girls were taken to some unknown city and the pirates dressed as merchants started bidding them for sale as slaves. The girls were very beautiful and looked fresh due to their innocence. Wicked men with lust surrounded them with the intention of buying them to appease their physical needs. The girls were trembling like leaves but still had hope that Krishna will help them in any situation. Hasn’t He saved them from the lust of the pirates in a miraculous way!  Here too He will come to their rescue was their thought.

To know what happened with the girls now and how they faced these situation do wait till our next issue. Radhe Krishna!!!

Radhekrishna

I offer my humble salutations at the lotus feet of Guruji Amma and Guruji. I feel really blessed to share one of the greatest experiences in my life till now. Had it not been for Guruji Amma and Guruji, I can’t even imagine how I could have handled the pressure and stress involved in achieving the coveted qualification – Chartered Accountancy. By the boundless grace of Guruji Amma and Guruji, I could clear Chartered Accountancy final examination comfortably in the first attempt.

For the background, I work in a multinational audit firm. It has been an eye-burning and back-breaking experience with the firm for me for the past two years. On account of work pressures and hectic schedules, I hardly got time to prepare for the final examinations. The final examinations were held in the month of May 2007. I got a break from the firm for a period of 4 months. But I had started the preparations seriously from the mid of December 2006 itself. Still I felt that 4 – 4.5 months was very little time to read, grasp and revise the ocean of final CA syllabus. Time and again I got tensed thinking of the syllabus and the pressure to deliver was mounting. In the month of December, I called Guruji and told Him about the situation. He said, “If Parikshit Maharaja could attain salvation (Moksha) just within 7 days, I don’t see any problem in you completing the final CA portions in 4 months”. Even Guruji Amma echoed the same thing by saying, “If Lord Krishna wants, he can make you grasp the entire syllabus in 4 days. That depends upon determination. Do namajapam and trust Krishna to the fullest.” These words from the Gurus flared me up. The strength and confidence automatically came from within. I said to myself, “Nothing is impossible when Guruji Amma and Guruji are constantly by my side.”

It was January and Guruji had come to Mumbai. I visited Him for a couple of days and got His blessings. The next four months passed in a jiffy. Everyday I used to do Namajapam and Gurudhyanam before starting the studies and in the afternoon, I used to listen to Amma’s bhajans. That had a soothing effect and eased out the pressure a lot. Radhekrishna. I used to converse with Guruji and Amma regularly.

By the grace of the Gurus, I was able to go through the portions thrice. I was confident but still the tension was at the back of my mind. I had decided to call Guruji Amma and Guruji both before and after each examination. Since Guruji was in Trivandrum, He asked me to call Him early in the morning.

It was my first exam. I got Their blessings and sat down to write my first paper. It was a 60-40 situation. 60% attempted horribly, I thought. I called up Amma and She asked me to calm down, not to get distracted and start the preparations for the next paper. I used to sleep for 3 hours in the night and by the end of 4th paper, I was fully exhausted. Still there were 4 papers to go. I called up Amma and she was flabbergasted over my behavior. She asked me to have adequate sleep and said that sleep deprivation could result in, me fainting at the examination hall. I studied very little for the 5th examination as it was formula and concept based paper.

The 7th paper was so horrible; I felt that there was no chance of clearing that paper. Again Amma asked me to stay cool and said that since I had written the paper for Krishna, there was no chance of failure. I was filled with energy and enthusiasm and I started to prepare for the last paper. I got to sleep for a couple of hours and was tired in the morning. But I was studying, doing Guru Dhyanam and chanting vigorously the entire night. The next morning when I called Guruji, I was in for a surprise. Guruji picked up the call and directly said, “You didn’t sleep the last night and didn’t allow me to sleep also”. Radhekrishna.. I couldn’t bear the mercy of Guruji. These magical words fired me up and I was determined to give my best shot in the last examination. And Krishna, the paper was fine and I got out confidently.

In the end, I prayed to Krishna, Amma and Guruji that I had written all the papers for them and they were my only hope. I prayed for a good result and handed over the paper.

After two months, it was the result time. Guruji was in Mumbai and I wanted Him to see the result first. I wanted Guruji Amma and Guruji to be the first witnesses of my result. We went to the website, I entered the roll number and with fast chanting, I clicked the enter button.

Radhekrishna, Radhekrishna, Radhekrishna ------ I qualified. I told Guruji that His shishyan had become a Chartered Accountant. Guruji was very happy and he embraced me. What else was required??? A tight hug from Guruji. It was a dream come true for me. I called up Guruji Amma to inform Her. She also blessed me.

It was the grace of the Mahatmas that showed me the road ahead. Timely chatting with them over the telephone cooled my nerves. I realized the true power of Namajapam and Guru dhyanam. My humble Radhekrishna at the Lotus feet of Guruji Amma and Guruji.
